Hibiscus seed oil is a rare botanical oil obtained from the seeds of Hibiscus sabdariffa L., also known as roselle or Sudanese rose.
It has a lightweight texture and is valued for its natural combination of unsaturated fatty acids, tocopherols, phytosterols and other lipophilic compounds.
According to scientific research, hibiscus seed oil contains:
- Unsaturated fatty acids — the foundation of the oil’s lipid profile:
- • Omega-6 — 30–45% — helps support the integrity of the skin barrier, helps soften the skin and maintain its natural moisture balance.
- • Omega-9 — 30–40% — helps soften the skin, improves the feeling of elasticity and helps reduce the sensation of dryness.
- • Palmitic acid — up to 27% — has emollient properties and contributes to the formation of the skin’s lipid layer.
- • Stearic acid — up to 5.5% — helps soften the skin and contributes to the oil’s conditioning properties.
- Vitamin E (tocopherols) — up to 2,000 mg/kg — a natural antioxidant, often referred to as the “vitamin of youth”.
- Phytosterols — up to 1.2% — plant sterols that may help soothe irritated skin, support the skin barrier and maintain healthy skin cell membranes.
- Squalene — a valuable component structurally similar to skin sebum, which helps support the skin’s natural protective functions and helps protect against oxidative stress.
With regular use, hibiscus seed oil helps maintain long-lasting skin hydration and supports the skin’s natural defence against visible signs of ageing.
Thanks to the antioxidant properties of vitamin E, it may also help smooth the appearance of fine lines.
It is particularly suitable for dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin prone to flaking and discomfort. It helps support the skin’s protective barrier, promotes a more even-looking complexion and helps restore a healthy-looking glow.
The oil also helps protect the skin from environmental stressors, including UV exposure and urban pollution, while supporting the skin’s natural collagen and elastin processes and helping maintain a youthful-looking appearance.
For Hair and ScalpHibiscus seed oil is considered a valuable oil for the care of damaged and weakened hair.
Thanks to its high content of Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids, it helps nourish the hair and scalp, supports stronger-looking roots and may help reduce the appearance of hair breakage and excessive hair shedding.
It helps improve the feel and appearance of brittle and split-prone hair along the lengths, leaving it looking smoother, shinier and more supple without weighing it down. It also helps soothe and soften the scalp.
For Eyelashes and EyebrowsHibiscus seed oil can be used as part of a conditioning routine for eyelashes and eyebrows.
It helps soften the hairs, giving them a more groomed appearance, and may help reduce dryness and brittleness.
For the BodyHibiscus seed oil is particularly suitable for caring for dry and rough body skin.
It helps soften the skin, supports its natural lipid barrier and helps reduce moisture loss, leaving the skin feeling smoother and more supple.
It is especially suitable for areas prone to dryness and flaking, including the elbows, knees, hands and feet.
Thanks to its tocopherols and other antioxidant compounds, hibiscus seed oil can also be incorporated into a daily skincare routine for skin exposed to environmental stressors.
